H1Z1: KotK AMA

The last few months have brought huge changes to H1Z1: King of the Kill. With the introduction of the combat update and the focus on quicker matches, Daybreak Games have been performing massive changes to the game. While these changes have been met with some controversy from the H1Z1: KotK community, the General Manager of H1Z1 at Daybreak Games Anthony Castoro took to Reddit to perform an AMA. He answered the community’s rising concerns and outlined Daybreak Studio’s goals with the changes they are making to the game.

Overall during the AMA, the team made it clear that while they are seeing a drop in the number of concurrent players due to the streaming ban in China, as well as the banning of thousands of bots, the games core community is actually growing. Many new players are being drawn to the game as the team continues its push towards quicker matches and faster gameplay to set itself apart from the growing competition in the Battle Royal Genre.

One of the main points the community has been arguing about has revolved around Concurrent Players due to the combat update. When asked about the drop in concurrent players since the release of the update, the team offered the following response:

“The short answer is that the combat update/current direction is not the cause of the CCU changes people are observing on Steam. Our DAU and peak concurrency has been significantly affected by the streaming ban in China. This has had knock-on effect on the West-coast NA population, which is multiplied by two other factors: A) we’ve been aggressively banning thousands of cheater/hacker accounts a day, the majority of which emanate from China. B) The combat update included a new system to prevent high ping players from using VPN to work around the ping lock, which is something most players wanted. Removing that, East Coast US and European DAU have been UP since the combat update.”

This answer provided some interesting details that many in the community were not aware of. Such as, while the overall number of players has dropped, Daybreak has seen a growing amount of Daily Active Users on the East Coast of the US as well as in Europe.

The next community hot topic has been the addition of new Points of Interest in the latest patches. Many have enjoyed the new Points of Interest, however others have wondered why they are including new POI’s instead of replacing the old POIs. When asked about this, the developers released the following answer:

“Some people in the community have asked for fewer POIs. Some have said “That’s enough” and others like the new POIs. The team looks at all of this and will continue to evaluate, but we don’t intend on adding more POIs after this update. re: faster games: The team understands that having more places to gear up allows some players to avoid conflict longer. On the other hand, the vast majority of players die in the first few minutes of the game, followed by a lull in the mid-game. This is a multi-dimensional problem that relates to more than just the number of POIs, including gas timing, gas speed, loot distro, starting player density, as well as vehicle availability.”

Beware of Scam Sites Impersonating OPSkins

Update 10/17: You can download this Google Chrome extension to block many of these sites.

Updated 9/28/17

OPSkins is the safest and most trusted marketplace for trading in-game items. Lately there has been a new wave of websites impersonating OPSkins, which scam users out of their items. Here are some steps you can take to safeguard yourself against this and other common scams:

  • Don’t fall for scam sites! Scam sites are any URL with opskins___.com  /  opskins.___  /  opskins-___.com including sites pretending to be OPSkins case opening or gambling sites. OPSkins has NO case sites and NO gambling sites and we are not affiliated with any. Recent examples are:
    • opskinscases.com
    • opskins-cases.com
    • mystery-case.com
    • opskins.promo
    • opskims.com
  • Another new fake site scam that we are seeing lately makes the characters in the URL look like it says opskins.com in your browser, this is particularly tricky when someone sends you a link and the underline hides the special characters:

  • Which are real OPSkins websites? Trust only websites that end with .opskins.com or .opsk.in Examples of these trusted URLs are:
  • ENABLE 2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATION ON YOUR ACCOUNT. We can’t stress this enough. This is the safest way to keep your account secure. You can do this by visiting your Account Page > Account Security. We also recommend that you enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator for additional security.
  • In general, if someone contacts you on Steam and asks you to list an item on OPSkins, they’re probably attempting to scam you.
  • Don’t trust anyone who contacts you claiming to be an OPSkins staff member. No one from OPSkins will ever add you on Steam, and/or ask you to trade an item. These are impostors who will scam you.
  • Check to make sure you’re trading with an OPSkins bot. When trading with a bot, check your security token and click the bot’s name to open its profile. From there, make sure that the bot is in the “OPSkins Bots” Steam group. The official OPSkins Bots Steam group is named exactly “OPSkins Bots” and has an abbreviation of “op-bots”
  • Do not download any OPSkins browser extensions. OPSkins doesn’t have any official extensions, and so any that you see are most likely intended to scam you out of your items.

Remember, OPSkins cannot restore any items or funds that were lost as part of a scam or hijacking. Your account security is your responsibility. Your account will remain safe if you don’t trust fake sites, don’t trust anyone pretending to be OPSkins staff, and don’t download malware. If you have any questions, you can always contact us by making a support ticket.

NEW: How to use OPSkins Advanced Search Functions

We’ve made some changes to the Advanced Search functionality on our site, and we’d like to take a few minutes to walk you through them.

These changes affect only the Search section within Advanced Search and so it affects any game you’re searching on OPSkins. You can use these functions along with the other search options in the Advanced Search box, such as price Range.

Here’s an abbreviated list of all available functionalities, and below that a detailed breakdown of each one:

Advanced Search Functionalities on OPSkins

 + signifies AND operation
| signifies OR operation
- negates a single token
" wraps a number of tokens to signify a phrase for searching
* at the end of a term signifies a prefix query
~N after a word signifies edit distance (fuzziness)

How to use Advanced Search Functionalities on OPSkins

1) + signifies AND operation
This one is easy. Put + between two terms and it’ll search listings that include both terms. For example searching CS:GO for knife + doppler or knife+doppler will bring up all listings including both terms such as Gut Knife | Doppler, StatTrak Gut Knife | Doppler, Flip Knife | Doppler etc.

2) | signifies OR operation

This functionality is important to pay attention to because the vertical line is not only a search command, it’s also a character in some item names in games like CS:GO, PAYDAY 2, and Killing Floor 2. To get the search result you want, you’ll want to make sure you’re using it properly.

So in our Advanced Search, | means OR and that’s only the case if there are no spaces between the terms and the vertical line. So for example searching nova|antique will find you all listings with the words nova OR antique:

However searching nova | antique (with spaces between the terms and the vertical line) behaves as if the vertical line wasn’t there at all, and will instead treat the search as if it were nova antique.

3) - negates a single token
Another easy one. Using - before a term means that term will NOT appear in search results. So searching gut knife -doppler -slaughter will show all gut knives except dopplers and slaughters.

4) " wraps a number of tokens to signify a phrase for searching

Using quotation marks before and after a term will generate results that include only that exact term. So let’s go back to our earlier nova example and search nova "hyper beast". This will generate all Nova | Hyper Beast listings including StatTrak items. But searching "hyper beast" will also include the M4A1-S | Hyper Beast, the AWP | Hyper Beast, the StatTrak™ Five-SeveN | Hyper Beast etc.

5) * at the end of a term signifies a prefix query

Using * at the end of a term will generate any results where characters appear after the term. For example, if you’re searching in PUBG items for pleated* then all Pleated Mini Skirts will appear, whereas searching mini* will show any Mini Skirt:

Alternatively, searching purple* will show any purple PUBG items including skirts, jackets, slacks etc:

6) ~N after a word signifies edit distance (fuzziness)

Put ~ and a number after a word to tell the Advanced Search engine how closely you want the results to match that term. If you were to search CS:GO items for hyper~2 it would show not only results containing the word Hyper, but also results with words that are two characters off, such as in this case Viper, since you indicated a fuzziness of two with the ~2. Also, M4A1~1 would show you all M4A1 and M4A4 skins because you’re allowing the term to be off by one character, whereas M4A1~2 will also result in those skins plus the AK-47 | Orbit Mk01 since that item name contains M_ _ 1 and you indicated a fuzziness of two.

Let us know if you have any questions about the new search functionalities in our Advanced Search update, we’re happy to help. What do you think of the new search options? Tell us in the comments.

Is PUBG The Next Trader’s Gold Rush?

Since its release, PLAYERUNKOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS has been growing at an outstanding rate. Record after record has fallen to the game as it has climbed its way to the top of the Steam charts, becoming the game with the most concurrent players in the history of Steam at over 1 million. Which the game growing so large and seeing so much success it’s important to take a look at the history of the marketplace so far and consider that PUBG may be the next huge trading market.

Source: SteamDB

One of the goals for the developers at Bluehole since the game hit early access has been building a successful marketplace. Creative Director Brendan “Player Unknown” Greene believes a PUBG marketplace is vitally important for the game to remain successful after launch.

When the game launched into early access, those who had pre-ordered the game were given the PLAYERUNKNOWN SET. This Crate was the first release of rare items into the game and quickly became highly coveted as the most-wanted outfit. For those who didn’t pre-order, the only way to acquire the outfit is to purchase it through the marketplace. This has caused the price of the items in the crate to quickly go from the $487 on 4/27/17 to its current price of $1,299.50 at the time this article was written.

The release of the August Update saw the addition of new items inspired by the Battle Royale movie which inspired the creation of the Battle Royal game mode seen in Arma, H1z1, and not the newest and most successful interation PUBG. These skins were added to the Survivor Crate, Wanderer Crate, as well as the inclusion of a new Gamescom Invitational Crate. While the Wanderer Crate and the Survivor Crate were free to open, the Gamescom Invitational Crate could only be opened with a key purchased for $2.50 each. Not only did this update add new cosmetic items, it also added a rarity level for items which consisted of the following, in order from most to least rare: Red, Pink, Purple, Blue, Green, and Gray.

The release of the Gamescom update pumped new life into the PUBG Market. The rarest items quickly grew in value on the marketplace, such as the School Skirt which became the most valued item in the new update and currently sits at $244 on the marketplace. The introduction of the new rarity levels also helped increase the values of the free to open crates, leading to a price increase of the rarer items with the top items such as the PLEATED MINI-SKIRT being valued at $135. After Gamescom, the Gamescom Invitational crates were pulled from the game which made the marketplace the only place to obtain the crates and the skins in them. However, the items available in the Wanderer Crate and the Survivor Crate still remain available in the game to be earned via Battle Points.

While the Gamescom Update was mainly used as a test for the crate system, it also gave traders a look at the direction Bluehole might take with the future of the crate system. If Bluehole continues in the direction of adding limited edition crates to be opened with keys, and the addition of new skins in the Battle Point, it will create a two-tier system which will continue to help the growth of the marketplace. The limited edition crate items should keep rising in price as they are removed from the game because there is no more supply, while items from the Battle Point crates continue to be available and so priced lower. This will close the gap between the price ranges on the marketplace, helping to provide an entry point for traders not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars for a single item. This system will also allow dedicated traders to play the market as prices fluctuate, earning enough through trading to give them the ability to pick up the limited edition higher priced items as they grow in rarity, and allowing them to increase their profits.

With the success of the game, the rapid growth of the user base, and the success of the games marketplace, all trends point to PUBG quickly becoming one of the largest economies in the world of in-game trading. With the relatively new trading scene, it’s easy to deduce that the market will only continue to grow as the game is released and more items are added. This makes it the perfect time for a player to become a trader.

AMA: Creative Director Brenden “PLAYERUNKNOWN” Greene

Brenden “PLAYERUNKNOWN” Greene dropped by the Top PUBG subreddit today to answer some questions from the community. While we didn’t get any groundbreaking info from the Creative Director, we did learn some interesting details on what to expect moving forward and some answers on some of the more frustrating issues players have experienced with the game.

Some of the biggest issues that players face while playing PUBG is the net code, server tick rate, and hit detection in the game. These have been issues that fans have been waiting to see improvement on since the release of early access and when asked about the net code issues Brenden gave the following response:

“This is not an easy task, and may take many months to implement but I understand your frustrations, and while I can’t speak to specifics about what and how we will optimize the net code (as it’s beyond my understanding) we will continue to apply optimizations and work to improve all the things you mentioned. It is one aspect of the game we want to improve!”

As we move later into the year, and the list of features being added to the game continues to grow, many have started to wonder if PUBG will keep its official release window and what features will be included when it moves from early access to launch. Thankfully, Brenden touched on the subject by giving a hard list of features that will be in release and reassured players it will be moving from early access before the end of the year.

“So, just to clarify what we will 100% be adding for the full release:

  • User interface rework
  • Profound debugging of the vehicles physics (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  • Bullet physics rework
  • Audio mix and volume rework
  • Client heavy optimizations (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  • Network code, predictions and tempo management heavy optimizations (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  • Improving server’s stability, and increase in performance and tick rate (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  • 3D Replays

Again, I just want to remind everyone that full release of the game doesn’t mean we stop development. We are building out a service that we intend to improve on over the coming months and years, and even if we don’t get everything into our full release, we will be working to add any missing features in the months and years following our move to 1.0”

Along with touching on net code and the features that players can expect to be added before the game moves into full release, Brenden also dropped a few new surprises that will be coming to the game. These surprises include improvements and reworks of Erangel, major improvements to the FPP experience, 3 new vehicles, and crosshair customization.

For full details on everything that was discussed be sure to head over to Reddit and check out the Full AMA. Also, be sure to drop a comment and let us know what you thought of the AMA and what features you are looking forward to the most for PUBG.
